Perspectives of Moldovan Fruit Production Development

July 20, 2005

Moldovan apple orchardOn June 12, 2005 CNFA's Agribusiness Development Project, funded by USAID, organized the second round table dedicated to the competitive development of Moldovan high value agriculture. This time the discussions focused on perspectives of Moldovan fruit production development. The main goal of the event was to increase the awareness of local fresh fruit producers and exporters about the need to raise the competitiveness of this sector as a means of entering more lucrative export markets.

Round table participants determined the most severe impediments for the Moldovan fruit sector today. According to the experts, the drawbacks range from the need for a competitive certification system, which would meet the requirements of international markets, to the lack of modern packaging techniques, a narrow diversity of fruit varieties, an incipient seedling production sector, fiscal burdens and limited investment.

Given the recent restrictions imposed by Russia to Moldovan fruit exports, diversifying the markets is a top priority for Moldovan fresh fruit producers and exporters. Round table participants agreed that these issues should be dealt with in the State programs for horticultural development and through international projects supporting this area of economic growth. The findings of the roundtable discussion are used in tailoring the strategy for assistance provided by the Agribusiness Development Project to Moldovan producers and processors.
