Field Day at Chitoroaga Family Farm

July 21, 2006

Stefan Chitoroaga FF organized a Field Day at his modernized farm in Podul Lung village, Calarasi County, on July 21, 2006. The family farm was founded in 1998 as a result of land privatization and since 2005, is a partner of USAID/CNFA’s Agribusiness Developing Project (ADP).

Stefan Chitoroaga decided to reorient his traditional open field production to a greenhouse production of vegetables after a study tour in Turkey, organized by ADP. Last year, he established over 1000 m2 of greenhouse areas for tomato, sweet pepper and eggplants.

The use of highly productive hybrids and modern drip irrigation systems currently allows the company to produce vegetables from mid-spring to early fall, thus increasing local employment by six more workers. In addition to the improved quality of vegetables, the products are now harvested two weeks earlier compared to the previous years with a price increase of 30-40% therefore meeting early season consumer demands.
