Douglas Menarchik impressed by a local entrepreneur during his visit to Moldova

May 21, 2007

Dr. Douglas Menarchik, the USAID Assistant Administrator (Acting) for Europe and Eurasia, visited the production site of Monicol Ltd Company in the course of his recent trip to Moldova. During the site-visit Dr. Menarchik met with Monicol Director Dumitru Vicol and discussed Moldovan business, export trends, community-investor relations, employees’ situation and other related issues.

At the production site, Dr. Menarchik also toured the premises, talked to employees and participated in a tasting-session of Monicol production. “I was surprised by the real interest Dr. Menarchik showed in our company. He asked a lot of relevant questions regarding our equipment, working conditions, exports and marketing, everything. But most important – he found our products very tasty!” declared Mr. Vicol who used the opportunity to present the new, branded produce “Fruit2Go” apple chips that Monicol will launch on the local retail market in the coming weeks.

Dr. Menarchik declared that the visit to Monicol was the highpoint of his trip to Moldova and he described Dumitru Vicol as the most progressive entrepreneur that he had seen on his trip.

Monicol Ltd is a client and grant beneficiary of the USAID-funded, CNFA-implemented Agribusiness Development Project (ADP). ADP provided technical assistance, direct consultation and grant investment to the company for the renovation of an aging factory in Nimoreni village, near the capital-city Chisinau. As a direct result of this assistance Monicol is now able to sell its product in the higher-value European Union and world markets. Export sales have gone from $670,000 in 2004 when ADP/USAID assistance was initiated to more than $ 3.5 mln in the current winter marketing season.
