Press Release: Iri-Carmen Opens Cold Storage Built With USA Support

August 9, 2007

Increasing international demand for off-season fresh fruits is an important opportunity for Moldova’s agricultural industry. By meeting this new market demand, the industry could substantially boost its export revenues. However, lack of modern infrastructure to store fruit remains a major obstacle. With funding from the US government, Iri-Carmen Ltd., a local company, has built a new cold storage facility to enable it to meet off-season market demand.

On August 10, 2007 at 11:00am in Lebedenco village, Cahul raion, an official opening of the Iri-Carmen cold storage facility will be held. Media, business representatives, local authorities and community members are invited to attend. A tour of the company will be organized for participants.

Iri-Carmen is a dynamic high value agriculture producer from the south of Moldova. Iri-Carmen received US technical assistance and financial support to build the cold storage facility through the USAID Agribusiness Development Project (ADP). The cold storage facility has the cooling capacity of 200 tons and will help the company sell high quality fresh fruits for export. As result of the new facility, the company created 2 full-time and 15 seasonal jobs.

Each year Iri-Carmen Ltd. produces about 600 tons of „Moldova” grapes and 500 tons of peaches. These crops are strategically important for the enterprise. Before the cold storage was built, the crops were being sold to several intermediaries who then sold the products to Russia, Romania and Ukraine at a triple the price. With its own cold storage facility, revenues from Iri-Carmen’s off-season fruit exports will remain in Moldova, benefiting the larger agriculture and rural economy.

Additionally, IRI-Carmen recently implemented the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) principles required by EU countries with the assistance of ADP. By successfully implemented these standards, Iri-Carmen will significantly improve their ability to penetrate lucrative Western markets.
