Moldova Farmers to Benefit from Hungarian Experience in the High-Value Agriculture Sector

October 31, 2007

November 1, 2007: For immediate release

On November 1st, 2007, the Agribusiness Development Project (ADP), in collaboration with the Moldova Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry (MAFI), will host a seminar on increasing the competitiveness of Moldova’s high-value agriculture (HVA) sector. The seminar will focus on the lessons learned from a 2007 ADP-sponsored study tour to Hungary. The event will be held in the Conference Hall of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry (Stefan cel Mare str. 162). Registration of participants starts at 9:30 AM.

The October study tour provided Moldovan representatives of agribusinesses and agricultural cooperatives, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the MAFI an opportunity to view first-hand how Hungary has addressed key challenges in the HVA sector. Hungary has had noted success in the development of agricultural product packing houses and the establishment of marketing cooperatives. As an EU member Hungary has also taken steps to improve the production, processing, and packing of fruits to meet European standards. Hungary’s model is especially relevant to the Moldova HVA sector, as many Moldovan farmers face significant difficulties in exporting products because of quality concerns and limited marketing and brand promotion. Moldovan agribusinesses also aim to export to many of the same markets that Hungary has succeeded in entering.

The seminar will be attended by representatives of agribusinesses, cooperatives and associations, individual farmers, government officials, researchers, consultants and international donors.

All mass-media representatives are invited.
